Drupalcon Chicago 2011

Tuesday, March 15th, 2011

From March 8th to March 11th, four members of our development team (Sr. Manager Dan Sundell, developers Dave Moore, Matt O’Toole and me, Kevin Moylan) attended Drupalcon Chicago, the number one Drupal Developers conference. We weren’t disappointed.

During the keynote address, Dries Buytaert (original creator of Drupal, President of the Drupal Association and CTO for Acquia) talked about the future directions that he would like to take Drupal 8. We later met with Dries and started a discussion about how the NPR Digital Services team could contribute to Drupal’s content publishing workflow design and configuration staging for Large Scale Drupal. Very, very cool.

Dave Moore participated in several Core Conversations for seasoned Drupal developers that are interested in driving the work being done for Drupal 8.

Little Bug, Big Audience, No Sweat

Friday, February 25th, 2011

Yesterday, one of our pilot stations hit it out of the park: 11,000+ views of one post, thanks to the fans of Fark.com:

The KPLU article titled New species of spider discovered in Seattle made its way to Fark and was picked up by many online readers. It’s the first time any of our stations’ posts have reached the five-figure range. The power of the online audience is mighty!

Here at PI, our technical teams kept an eye on our servers to monitor how the new traffic affected our software and hardware. Not even a blip: our setup handled the traffic spike without breaking a sweat.

To quote a team member’s report:

We’ve seriously got a powerhouse here that is ready to handle several orders of magnitude more traffic. Bring ‘em on!

Congratulations to the KPLU team!

Core Publisher at IMA

Thursday, February 17th, 2011

Are you going to the IMA conference in Austin next month? No? Well, maybe you should consider it. We’re going to demo Core Publisher, and you’ll hear KPLU talk about it at this session:

Take Advantage of NPR and PBS! Tactics You Can Implement Now
Panel led by PBS, NPR, KPLU and a variety of stations

KUNC: Audio, and Playlists, and Stories! API!

Monday, February 14th, 2011

Ok, so you may have looked at the new KUNC Core Publisher Station Site and thought

Big deal, I’ve seen station sites like this before, although this one is rather handsome. Hey, where’s all that stuff that I used to see on the old site?!

While the homepage has a nice overview of what’s going on, there are some cool things happening in the program pages.

Highlights From Training at KPLU

Friday, January 28th, 2011

As I wrote earlier, PI / NPR visited the staff of KPLU in Seattle for an intensive week of multimedia training. We focused on the basics: writing for a blog, headlines, photography, social media tools, metrics, search engine optimization, and many other topics. We spent time examining ourselves as consumers of online content and what we’d like to see in a blog post. Remember, it’s a visual medium!

KPLU is now featuring their reporters’ content on their home page at KPLU.org. The staff is reporting and curating content to best serve their community.

Take a look! Send us comments! I hope you follow their reporting more closely onFacebook and Twitter:

@tompaulson (KPLU’s Humanosphere blogger)

@KPLUGary (KPLU’s online managing editor Gary Davis)

Here are some highlights from our week in Seattle:

River of News as Home Page

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

Two of our pilot stations have taken the leap and made their Core Publisher sites their respective home page:

KPLU was using Public Platform for their home page prior to this switch. This transition puts the ‘river of news‘ on their home pages.

Comparatively, the new home pages sport a cleaner and sleeker design, leverage Drupal out-of-the-box search engine friendly URLs, have more frequently updated local content that is more likely to be ‘sticky’ for end users.

Take a look and send us your comments!

Core Publisher on Drupal 7.0

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

I am happy and proud to announce that Core Publisher is now running the official release of Drupal 7.0, which became available this morning as scheduled.

Our upgrade went smoothly. Pilot stations have been notified, and things are looking good. It is on my tasklist to shower the team with compliments.

From Mashable:

“After nearly three years of development, Drupal 7.0 is officially available. The latest release of the open source content management system that powers high profile websites like WhiteHouse.gov features a revamped admin interface, more flexibility options for content and more optimized code.”

We give our clients only the best: White House quality.

Congratulations, team!

Happy 2011: New Year Resolutions and Drupal Plans

Monday, December 27th, 2010

Our friend and recent editorial consultant Steve Safran put together a list today of Ten Newsroom Resolutions for 2011:

I am most fond of numbers 8 through 10, as they align very well with the Core Publisher project (bonus: alliterative list!):

  • Embrace Continuous News
  • Expand Your Social Media
  • Engage Your Audience

I am also happy and proud to see that many other items on his list mesh well with Core Publisher’s grand plan.

Can we do it all in 2011? I don’t know, but we’ll try.  Check out Steve’s full list at Lost Remote.

In other news, Drupal released RC 3 (see more on Release Candidates here). So far, the plan for official Drupal 7 release on January 5 is still on!

I’ve got my fingers crossed, my hopes high, and am looking forward to the new year. Happy 2011, everybody!

Drupal 7 Launch Scheduled

Tuesday, December 21st, 2010

This just in: Dries‘ blog announces the official release of Drupal 7, scheduled for the first week of 2011.

PI’s Core Publisher has just moved to RC 1 (Release Candidate 1) this week, and we’re aiming for RC 2 in our next sprint, which starts tomorrow. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that the Drupal release will go as planned on January 5th without any showstoppers, so we can follow quickly in its wake with Core Publisher upgrades.

To celebrate the release, parties are happening all around the world. Plus: a DIY party guide!
